CALIBAN number 7 mar. '45 The APAs That Bloom In The Spring, Tra-La.... For this least worthy of all Vanguardzines, apologies. The first mailing is going out on time, for which let the praises of Lowndes be sung from the housetops. My voice -- using the term loosely, of course -- will join therein with nary a trace of bitterness over the lost chance of making this an item I could really be proud of, had only the date of posting done the well-known FAPA creep. The late -- using the term to mean anything you choose -- Larry Shaw might have had room in his heart for bitterness, but never the great Destiny! No bitterness -- only shame and sorrow, with not even an attempt to excuse myself by telling you how Michel made me go to bed on time instead of sitting up all night stenciling and mimeoing that I might be proud and Vanguard happy. For including this sheet at all, the following rationalizations may serve as reasons to the more non-discerning of you, if any such there be on our hand-picked list. Primarily, I wanted to include in the grand opening all three of the publications which have become closest to my heart in my stencil-smashing career. And Caliban, outside of a few suitable quotations, must contain only my own writings, of which there are none to be found just now. There was, however, an already printed cover on hand -- a cover which represents my stylus-work at its best, which has "Vanguard" smeared all over it in large letters as I thought someone should certainly smear it in this mailing, and which would have lost much of its effectiveness had I held it over. Aside from that, I just wanted to pass onto you that my favorite prophet ("Your wate and fortune 1 cent") predicts a great future for Vanguard, and the limb seems quite solidly anchored as I crawl out to agree. My joy at being included in is boundless; my advisorship causes me to float upon the fleeciest of clouds. And if you're all wonderful wonderful people and I lover every one of you. -- Destiny PS: To James James Blish, a sincere plea of forgiveness. His music for Kornbluth's poem is not in this mailing. I hope it will be in the next one. If not, there's only the river.... A Destiny Publication
