JUST A SHORT Once upon a time. the story goes, there lived an outstandingly wise and beautiful Amazon type woman. A woman named "Margaret of Urbs". BLACK FLAME was the title given her, which stood for authority and power, and also for the raven black hair that crowned her exquisite features and head. She excelled in every field, over man and woman. Margaret of Urbs lived in the first stages of Science-Fiction and has become legend among fans. This supreme character was created by Stanley Weinbaum, in Startling Stories, 1939. The Editor dedicated this mag to Mr. Weinbaum's memory and to the "BLACK FLAME", being the first SF story that, when she was first introduced to the field, left such an individual and vivid impression among the many stories that she read. All stories and articles will be by Wo-fans only, therefore, an S will be added--- BLACK FLAMES -- which will stand for many women, whereas, if it was not added, the name would represent only one. Until further notice, BF will not be published on any definite date but only when more material arrives to make it possible for quicker magazine turn-outs. All manuscripts and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Would like, also, after first issue, a card or letter expressing approval or criticism, from all who receive the mag. Subscription prices will depend on size of each issue. Sincerely, By Flames. Editor. Jim. E Daugherty 1305 W. Ingraham Los Angeles, 14, Cal. 3
