TYCHO Page 17 top-flight poets like Coblentz, Smith (CA), Lorraine, Lovecraft, Lowndes, etc. It is also hoped to be able to include verse from the majority of the better fan-poets, many of whom have written poetry of a very high quality. Indeed, nobody is barred from the volume providing he or she can meet the editorial requirements for poems. It is hoped to have poems from as many poets as possible, in order to make the book as representative of the field as can be. Difficulties in contacting many poets have been encountered, which indicated that some of them will not be represented, thus, to some extent, cutting down the scope of the work. This is an obstacle that any anthologist must struggle with. Poets are like all people -- they move about without leaving any forward address. All of which adds up to the troubles of the anthologist. But no anthology can really hope to cover all the field of f-w verse. It is a broad field, crowded with poets and poetry, and it would require a whole stack of anthologies to present even a part of it. At the most it can be briefly scanned, and if the presently preparing work can do that adequately, then the compiler will rest content. Caging even some of the brood of that "gaunt, ungainly, bird of yore" between the covers of a book, is a trying and arduous task, but a necessary one -- and a fascinating one. At least to a lover of weird elder worlds, prophetic visions, inaccessible way-sides -- and whole haunting array of events and vistas the f-w poet presents. ---------------- Fanzine Controversy --- MFS". We wonder, have any other fans received letters from these fictitious personages? We wonder what will happen to fandom with the passing of the new 18- and 19-year-old draft laws? An alarming number of actifans have already been snatched up by the army. Fandom's ranks will undoubtedly be depleted greatly when the lower age group has to go. Not that we like to be pessimistic, but our opinion is that fandom is in for a slump. Gas rationing and the rubber scarcity effectively blocking transportation, will thus prevent the annual science-fiction conventions and conferences. More and more of the fans not already in the army have their spare time occupied with jobs, so plentiful these days. If the NFFF and the FAPA can manage to continue functioning for the duration though, there shouldn't be any cause for worry, for they offer plenty of activity and a reason for fandom survive. Al Ashley and the Nova staff have something new in the way of fan magazine equipment, and we should be seeing some nifty results in a future issue of Nova. It's called a photoscope.
