The scientific work of the world has come to a standstill. The political arena alone is of any importance, for it is today all-embracing and all-important. In this regard, I step out of may [sic] self-assured role as stf theoretician for the moment to beg that all my readers, whether in agreement with my ideas or general notions, realize that at this instant the fate of the world is definitely at stake. The field is Spain, the issue is civilized culture and democracy, the need is the staving off of fascism and its drive to war. The call is to save the Spanisg [sic] Republic which, during its four years, has done more to crush illiteracy, stupidity, and feudal lethargy than the past century. The request is to write now to the president to urge in the name of science, in the name of civilization itself, the lifting of the unfair, undemocratic embargo upon the Spanish Republic. It is a small thing, but it is the most important thing on earth at this moment. It looms vaster than any convention, club, or rocket design. Its significance has become almost all embracing... The SCIENCE FICTION COMMITTEE AGAINST FASCISM has gathered about 65 signatures to its declaration. The work of distributing this will now begin... FANTASTIC ADVENTURES will appear on the stands in March. ... BLUE BOOK features OUR WAR OF 1939, about an attack on the Panama Canal.... Robert W. Lowndes, Literary and Poet Laureate of the FAPA, is planning to buy a duplicating machine, which will mean that STRANGE, stf's most literary output will see a regular publication date... The date set for the wedding of Fred Pohl and Leslie Perri is May 10th, if it goes through, and all indications are that it will, it will mark the first wedding of FAPA members... GENERAL MANPOWER (Simon and Schuster) by John H. Martin is the latest stf book published. Its tone is semi-fascist... James Joyce's famous WORK IN PROGRESS on which he has been working for a dozen
