[Title in large rounded letters] Filler -- Pure Filler [smaller letters next to title] Some thoughts to reassure you [centered under title] Bob Tucker [indented] This isn't to aplogize, this is to explain somewhat, what you may think is a lack of hysteric browbeating over the coming Convention. I recall perfectly just about this same time last year...one would have thought the Martians were coming, and had radiod aheadto say they would be here July 4th. I'm afraid the gang that staged last year's Convention left a precedent that all fans of future years are going to expect all future Convention committee's to follow. [indented] Maybe you think because each and every member of the committee hasn't gone into hysterics, every time he opens his mouth in print, the Convention isn't going to be much. Perhaps you have a hunch that because we [haven't] bombarded you with terrific adjectives, this year's jubilee is going to be a pale second-fiddle. And maybe because you have noted that so-far, all the big editors [underlined] haven't promised to be there, it isn't going to be much of an affair. What a rude awakening you are in for! [indented] As this is written, I haven't yet saw Reinsberg, nor his articles for this issue of [underlined title] Fantasy Fictioneer, but we are expecting him and Korshak down from Chicago any day soon, bring the tentative pro-gram plans with them. I am pretty eager to see those plans.....and if any weak spots, or doubtful events are included in them, you can bet we will iron them right right on the spot! [indented] I also wish to call your attention to the remarkable advertising, quite a bit of it we did not ask for, popping up in fanmags! Particularly the [underlined] four-color page published by the magazine, [title underlined] Pluto, and reprinted for this issue. The Literature, Science & Hobbies Club of Decker, Indiana publishes [title underlined] Pluto, gave us this swell plug, and furthermore, furnished us with two hundred extra copies of this cover, [underlined] free, for our own use! [indented] Hardly an issue of any fan magazine you can name appears at present without a plug for the Convention. Anything and every thing from small one-or-two line, one column sticks, to full page ads! While this was prevalent last year, I sincerly believe it was not so widespread and contagious as this year. Despite some pessimistic state-ments made by persons who should know better, I believe that the Chicon will be larger than the Nycon in a matter of attendance! Why we should be held down to a meagerly one or two hundred, just because [underlined] they aren't coming, is more than I can comprehend! [indented] As you have probably already read or heard, the date for the Chicon is are the Labor Day Holidays. I refer you to Reinsbergs columns for what events are planed for those days. [indented] Might I suggest that groups, in or near large cities look into the matter of [underlined] chartering buses! The round trip fare from NYC to Chicago, via Greyhound nears twenty dollars. Ten fans from NYC means two hundred dollars for the bus company. It seems to me a bus can be chartered for [underlined] less than two hundred dollars! Look into it!
