SPACEWAYS 19 OFFTRAIL SOURCES OF STF. AND ARTICLES by RUSSELL COX In a recent editorial of Fantasy-News, a statement was made bemoaning the scarcity of new sources of science fiction. I feel sure the author of that editorial did not realize, as well as numerous other fans, that a wealth of such material is being published today. In most cases this material is in publications well within the means of all to purchase, or is readily accessible to all. Much of this material is of importance to the avid collector of this type of literature, as well as to any other fan who likes to keep up with the fiction and fact angles of scientific and weird literature. I try to cover this field in order to add to my collection and as a consequence I feel that most of you readers would appreciate a list of these sources, to use as a checklist for further investigation of your own. Every issue of these sources does not contain the material you seek, so you will have to look over each one before you buy it. The following is a fairly complete list of these sources. Most of you are familiar with Argosy and Blue Book as sources, but the other names may not be so familiar. Liberty, Colliers, True, Jungle Stories, Action Stories, Doc Savage, Coronet, Esquire, The American Weekly, PM, and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch are good magazines and papers that carry scientific fiction and articles. Two other good sources for the collector are Pocket Books and Little Blue Books. To help you decide which ones you want to add to your list I will give you a brief overview of material in recent issues of these sources. Liberty recently ran "Lightning in the Night", a fine future invasion of America story, and will run a Tarzan story soon. True had an article on ghosts, prophecy, etc. It often contains articles and stories of this type. Coronet in each issue publishes two departments: "Forgotten Mysteries" and "Not of Our Species", which are full of offtrail happenings, experiences, and so forth. Jungle Stories in each issue publishes a long novel about a character similar to Tarzan. Action Stories publishes an occasional story of science by Nelson S. Bond, etc. Pocket Books and Little Blue Books publish stories of science by Wells, Poe, de Kruff, and others. ......................................................................................................... MY GOD 3 by RICHARD KRAFT My God! The water was in my nose; Running and dripping throughout my clothes; Soaking my shoes and filling my brain; Carrying me down where old ships had lain For centuries.... My God! The water was sickly green And horrid were the sights to be seen: Of skeletons and cadavers leering at me-- 'Neath the moaning, groaning, slithering sea.... And I was drowned! I came upon an Idol black, Whose yellow-rimmed eyes stared right back.... And bubbles of foam from his nose did spew-- A brain-bulb exploded, and then I knew! My God....
