"Whatever I have been able to achieve -- in personal poise, stability, adequacy -- has come to me by way of the obstacles I have met....This has always been true of men -- since the dawn. Emergencies have always been necessary to man's evolution. It was the darkness that produced the lamp. It was the fog that produced the compass. It was winter that clothed us, hunger that drove us to exploration. The aviator can taxi all day on the ground with the wind behind his back, but if he hopes to rise he must drive into the face of it." One great phrase of the present war is the magnificent idea that is behind it -- the collossal idea that has been so staggering to those men who would continue to rule the world that they have been forced to bring this war to keep that idea from reaching fulfillment. Vainly -- I fully believe, and hope. That is the idea that is expressed in our own national ideology -- "ALL men are created equal". Yet even we of America have not been willing, as a whole, to face that fact. We do not want to think that ALL men are equal -- we want to feel that some, even in our own country and among our own citizenry, are NOT our equals. We do not give full equality, either socially, educationally, economically or politically -- especially politically -- to quite an astounding percentage of our citizens. We have our negro and our Indian problems -- problems because we will not face that fact squarely, courageously and honestly. We have our slum districts, our "poor white trash", our share-croppers and tenant farmers, because we are not willing to admit that these people are our equals. And therefore, we will not allow them the chance of becoming our equals. But that idea has been born in men's minds, and daily and yearly grows stronger. This war is being fought to keep it down, but it cannot be kept down. Mankind is on the forward march, and that very fact of ideology is the next great upward advance. Just to show how little we dare face the truth -- even now we are arming, training and expending our boys to fight, not for the complete individual freedom of all men -- everywhere -- but to "save the United States from despoilment". Oh, yes, I know it has been said otherwise occasionally, and in our propaganda. But our "politician" leaders really do not mean it. They are not willing to face that fact, nor to let it come into being, if possible to prevent it, for that would mean the end of their own almost dictatorial powers. Yet, unless we come out of this world-holocaust admit- 6
