self a treat of personal enjoyment, and an increase of Personal Adequacy that will uplift you for days. But remember that your money is not all you must give to obtain the greatest happiness. Remember that old quotation, "for the gift without the giver is bare"? You must, also and foremost, give YOURSELF. Have you a friend or a neighbor who is ill, perhaps? Do you just send him a card of condolence, or do you go over to his house a couple of times a day to fix the furnace, shovel out the ashes, clean the snow off his walks, or help mow his lawn and weed out his "victory" garden lest it be spoiled by inattention? Do you ring up on the telephone and mumble something about "I'm sorry"? Do you say, plaintively, "Now, if there's anything I can do to help, be sure you let me know!" You know darned well they'll never ask you, any more than you would if you were the sick one. No, don't ask -- DO IT! Give freely of yourself, of your time, and of your cheerfulness, your friendliness, your neighborliness. For friendship has one great attribute nothing else possesses -- the more you spend of it the more it doubles and trebles in value to you. [[underline]]It is impossible to use it all up[[end underline]] -- the more you use it the greater and stronger and more satisfactory it becomes to you and to others. Another of the things to be used in making the building blocks for the construction of your personal Shangri La, is to read lots of the best books. I know you Fen[?] read constantly, but you must look outside of our hobby of Scienti-fiction and Fantasy as well as within it, for the ideas and philosophies of the world's great writers. And also to build yourself a well-rounded life, as well as a happy one. I do not necessarily mean the so-called "classics" -- but good, sound books; and magazine articles, and stories. Study new and interesting subjects, to increase your knowledge of the world, its people, and their motivating actions. Study especially the things in which your wife and your children -- if you have such -- are interested, so that you can keep up with their interests, and be more companionable with them, and more at ease with their conversation. Keep your mind open and fresh for new ideas; new vistas of imagination and fact. There is so much beauty in the world, that it will surprise you with its vastness when you really start looking [[underline]]for[[end underline]] it, and [[underline]]at[[end underline]] it. For there is beauty in everything if you but can see it -- like the rose that grows in the dung-heap -- look at the beauty of the rose, not the filth of the dung. 13
