and freedom. That is what each one of us wants, and if we can express it in other words it still means the same. "The question is how we can ALL have security and freedom? Some people believe that they can gain these things for their own country and for themselves through war, through the building of and protecting of empire, through exploitation of others and the building of huge fortunes, through the accumulation of material goods and position and power. "This I do not believe. I believe what a number of great thinkers of various countries have stated again and again: NO ONE can have real security and freedom until EVERYONE of all countries has security and freedom. I really believe this, and it is proven in many ways. "We just heard from *** (who is in the National Labor Relations Board) that a mine was closed down because it could no longer compete with a mine producing the same rare metal in South Africa where the natives were being paid ten cents a day. "We cannot have real security from war and real freedom of action until people of every country have these and there is no further need for aggression and stealing of territory and markets. Therefore, the important job is not to kill those who are seeking security and freedom in the only ways they know, nor to protect the great empires of Britain, Holland, France or the U.S., which all enrich the mother countries at the expense of the natives. "The important thing is to see ways of creating security and freedom for all men as soon as possible. It could be done if we accept that as our job. Until we do, we shall continue to have wars and unemployment and economic depression or inflation. When things get bad enough we shall have revolution but that is not necessarily the answer because it just means that a new bunch of people are on top and there is a new bunch of underdogs. So it goes. "We must ourselves live so that we do nothing to destroy the security and freedom of others. No matter what we believe we all have to sacrifice some of each of these things ourselves, and the important thing is that we do not demand additional sacrifice from others. "We do not ask that any one defend us by military means. Perhaps we could go so far, and it really is extreme, as to suggest that if any nation permits any other nation to be so insecure and so desperate that it wants to invade the first nation, then the first nation has no right to do anything but accept the result of its failure to create security and freedom in the second nation. You must admit that this very extreme, but perhaps if we took such an attitude and actually suffered the result 12
