COMENT AND CRITICISM EXCERPTS FROM LETTERS GRACIOUSLY SENT FOLLOWING READING OF THE FIRST ISSUE OF "THE TIME BENDER" RAYMOND W. WASHINGTON, JR. "I think your TIME-BINDER...was a real pleasure to read. I agree with you. If the people of this earth were to return to the basic varieties, if your pamphlet could achieve international circulation, I believe that it would work more good than any similar document of its kind. I agree with your section on Statesmanship more than on the others. "You seem to have a genuine love for the human race, and I envy you. I may love the abstraction of Man, but I can not really feel an overpowering emotional oneness with my fellows. I consider myself decent in my conduct towards friends, acquaintances, and strangers; but in most of them I can find no deep ideals such as you possess. Their world of ideas is limited, horribly limited, and if they are part of this onward surge toward better things that you believe in, they are not aware of it. ((Are you sure?)) "I am inclined to think of humanity's onward march in terms of vast social forces, maturing and developing like gigantic spiritual organisms, rather than in terms of individuals. Once I read an article that referred to Marshal Timoshenko as the savior of Russia, perhaps the world. I consider that idea rot. The times produce men to wield the weapon of the masses; economic and political forces evolve and shape the world into ever-more-complicated patterns. We are merely bubbles in this ocean, and are 'swayed by vaster ebbs and flows than can be known to you and me'. "Your article is, however, a 'drop' -- but most of the human race must be pushed and kicked and coaxed along the road." **** JOE KENNEDY. "I received, not so long ago the copy of THE TIME-BINDER and consider it one of the sanest things I've seen come out of Fandom. The issue was beautifully reproduced, as to format, and material; indeed a refreshing switch from the usual ego-boosting found in most of the current crop. "The section on ACHIEVING PERSONAL ADEQUACY was especially excellent. Your philosophy seems sound, though not perfect. In parts it displays a great similarity to some of the basic fundamentals of the Christian doctrine -- a system of teaching which most of fandom has apparently greatly misunderstood. 17
