Vanguard Boojum page 24 (knight, his reviews - continued) I disapprove of yours, but not violently; I haven't got any of my own that I'm satisfied with, & have to be meek. ... What "amateur publisher's privileged status", Kidd? I've tripped over my own errors too recently to be dogmatic, but I think this is a fantasy of Mr. Wollheim's. You might substitute "unlikelihood-of-being-noticed-by-the-copyright-owners", though, and stay happy. No charge. ... Colophon: What change of seeing one of Doc's technicolor doodles in Renascence? #2 But was it worth all that trouble? Vanguard Variorum The Blish-Lowndes argument: I have a suspicion that one of the gentlemen involved knows the difference between "dialectics" and "dialectical materialism", but I can't prove it. ... Would like to ask the B. to document his curious remarks about the Japanese war, but it would only lead to bloodshed. In fairness, though, I should add that I infinitely prefer this sort of thing to the Micheim-Kepner's cafeteria-crimson Toward Tomorrow, which I've just seen. Transferred to this subject, at least, Marxian vaudeville" is perfectly apt. ... S? T. C. Emden: I may have said it, but I was only fooling'. Love, from -- Contingent Conway. ... The apa history was biased and misleading? Howcome and where? ... In re Grassly: did you choke slightly between "I don't know" and "I think it's for damn sure"? Incidentally, I don't know who sent a dirty Christmas card to Sykora, circa 1939, but it positively wasn't a certain nameless character who used to be a personal friend of mine, and was probably even somebody's guest at the time of the incident. ... If you really want to know, the questions in your poll sheet struck me as either tedious or embarrassing. Example of the former: "Lapa contributions, by mailings". Example of the latter: "Outstanding achievements". On these counts, it seemed to me that the poll would be a trial both to the person filling it out and the person who had to read it. Obviously our ideas of Vanguard psychology differ. We could argue about it, I suppose, but this would involve discussing the Fan Mind, and I'm afraid Blish would snicker at us. The Kubilius Revision, tho, as I said before, appears to me to make perfectly good sense, and I'd like to see somebody tackle it -- preferably you, if you can get over feeling sat upon. ... Shaw: you can't even tell when you need a haircut. Vanguard Amateur Only one complaint: have you any particular reason for underlining Vanguard? And one low jibe: don't you think all the blank lines involved in nonstoparagraphing make the magazine look like hell, Doc? ********************* Outer Lobby Notes: Fellow V's will kindly bear in mind, I trust, that the editor made every attempt to correct typos or misspellings in the copy submitted. Thus, the chances are ten to one that any misspellings or obvious typos you see in these pages were made by your Tyrant, who types with his wolf-whip. At the present writing, I'm not sure whether this page is the finale, or if these notes are only an intermission. I more reviews come in, within the fortnight, Boojum will continue. If not (I hope) however I may hate my longwinded subjects at the moment, I love you one and all. Pox vobiscum. (RWL)
