4. and adequate allocation of responsibility. In recognition of the outstanding achievement in promoting human relations in the community during 1963, the Committee presented a citation to the City Council of Iowa City for its action in establishing the municipal commission. The Committee also has written to Governor Harold Hughes offering the services and facilities of the University in any way, including the sponsorship of a state-wide conference on discrimination at Iowa City, which will aid the work of the Governor's Commission on Human Rights. 5. Education -- The Committee has attempted to utilize education as a vigorous force in the elimination of bigotry. It has held open meetings to discuss local problems, and it sponsored the appearance of Mr. Peter Sussman, the assistant director of the United States Commission on Civil Rights, who came to the campus to speak on national areas of concern. Members of the Committee have spoken on innumerable occasions to student, faculty and community groups. At the present time, a proposal is under consideration to hold a campus conference early in 1964, to discuss various facets of the problem of education and human rights. More specifically, the Extension Division is making available to the public a film on housing discrimination produced by the University of Wisconsin. The College of Education is responding to an offer by the Iowa City Superintendent of Schools to evaluate the human relations content of the public school curriculum.
