-2- The Sub-Committee on Student Organizations has recently been directed to review the status of all presently approved local organizations on campus with respect to their prerogative to exercise free choice in the selection of members on the basis of merit and without restriction as to race, color,or national origin. It has been directed further, in connection with any organizations which may have such restrictions, written or unwritten, to institute in advance of the October 1, 1965, deadline, such remedial procedures or measures as might be instrumental in insuring compliance with the spirit and letter of the provisions by that time. It should be emphasized that the provisions should not be construed to be in any sense an abridgement of, or interference with, the rights and prerogatives of organized social groups within the University to select their own members upon the basis of their individual merits as persons. The Committee wish to cooperate, counsel, and work with both national and local organizations in the achievement of the University's objectives in a spirit of what we trust will be mutual helpfulness and good will. A copy of this letter is being transmitted to the local affiliate of your organization; and attached is a copy of our letter to the president of your University of Iowa chapter. Sincerely, M.L . Huit, Chairman Sub-Committee on Student Organizations
