STATE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA IOWA CITY, IOWA [emblem] Office of Student Affairs Dear As you will recall, the Committee on Student Life, with the support of the Student Senate and the Interfraternity Council, on May 11, 1962, established a deadline date of October 1, 1965, by which time all local organizations on campus are expected to be able to exercise the free choice of members on the basis of their merits as individuals and without restriction as to race, color, or national origin. A Sub-Committee on Student Organizations has recently been appointed by the Committee on Student Life, with a directive to implement the newly established policy. The Sub-Committee's first step in this direction has been to communicate to all national organizations which have local affiliates on our campus, some word about the basic provisions of the policy. A copy of our letter to your national headquarters is attached to provide you this information. As mentioned in the letter to your national organization, the Sub-Committee on Student Organizations will be reviewing the status of all existing approved organizations on campus with respect to their prerogative to exercise free choice in the selection of members. In any instance where it appears that the local organization may not exercise such free choice by reason of written or unwritten policies established by the national organization which in effect excluded certain members of grounds solely on race, color, or national origin, constructive efforts will be made by the Committee to work with the local organization to the end that compliance with the spirit and letter of such provisions can be assured in advance of the deadline date. Let me reiterate that the Sub-Committee wishes to cooperate, counsel and work with both national and local organizations toward the achievement of the University's objectives in the spirit of what we trust will be mutual helpfulness and good will. A copy of this letter is going forward to your national organization for its information. Sincerely, M.L. Huit, Chairman Sub-Committee on Student Organizations Committee on Student Life MLH:de Enclosure
