MINUTES OF THE UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE ON HUMAN RIGHTS Time: Wednesday, September 18, 1963, 7:30 p.m. Place: 132 Conference Room, College of Law Present: Sara Brogan Edward Bennett Michael Carver Philip Hubbard Donald Johnson William Nusser Willard Boyd The Chairman called the meeting to order and gave a brief review of the work of the committee since its inception in February, 1963. The problem of placement of university graduates was discussed and Professor Hubbard will continue to work on this problem and make contact with the Urban League concerning its placement program in conjunction with a number of universities. Professor Hubbard will also make contact with the Iowa City Commission on Human Relations concerning local employment practices. Boyd indicated that the committee's two housing referees, Harlow and Davidson, had met with Weintraub and Boyd during the summer and it had been agreed to keep the referees' procedure fluid so that experience could guide the referees in the development of their procedures. It was agreed Messrs. Nusser, Johnson, Bennett and Carver would work with the Office of Student Affairs on the question of student housing. Carver suggested that the Daily Iowan be requested to carry a series of articles on the work of the committee in the off-campus housing area. This was felt necessary because of the fact that the individual booklet on human rights has not been prepared to date (Bennett, Rhatigan and Boyd subsequently met with Gary Spurgeon from the Daily Iowan to review the off-campus housing situation and the committee's program in this area). The committee discussed the preparation of the small booklet on human rights and it was the committee's consensus that the book should be expanded beyond the housing policy to include a brief discussion of the university's policy and the work of the committee in the field of human rights.
