Gulfport, Mississippi 3 August 1964 I am on my way to my assignment, which is Moss Point to work on voter registration. My address will be: 809 Bowen, Moss Point, Miss. It is in the Gulf Coast area, which is relatively safe compared to other parts of the state. We stopped in Gulfport on the way and the fellow who was driving us (from the N.C.C) had a meeting, so we will stay until this evening as Jim Forman is coming here for a mass meeting tonight. I went out canvasing with leaflets for a while this afternoon. Orientation was a very good experience, although it was shorter and more intensified than the Oxford sessions. There were 26 people at the session here; there was another orienatation in Washington, D.C. It was an interesting group; there were only 7 undergraduates there, many were teachers and professors. and were in their 30's and 40's and some even past that; many were also married with children. It was much more allAmerican than I would have expected, including a former basketball referee, etc. These sessions were called because they decided ten days ago to opn up Freedom schools in Jackson. Originally they weren't going to, but there was so much pressure from the eople in Jackson that they decided to institute a crash program; thus the call for teachers. It sounds as if it will be a very exciting program. I was very impressed with what I have seen of the wohole
