From five to twenty-five junior women are selected by the outgoing chapter and tapped at the annual Leadership Banquet. Mortar Board is both an honor and a responsibility, as the members sponsor several projects such as the "Smarty Party" which recognizes coeds with a grade-point average of 3.25 or better for the first semester. A Mortar Board white blazer is a symbol of an outstanding woman on the SUI campus. The ultimate goal of second-semester women is to be elected to Phi Beta Kappa. This honorary initiates liberal arts students who rank in the top 10 per cent of their class. The Phi Beta Kappa key is a prized possession of the men and women who belong to this old and honored organization.
