there will be informal, so you needn't dress up on this first evening. You'll get a chance to talk with your host and hostess, your leaders, and each other, and will find that this is the perfect time to raise questions about any and every phase of The University of Iowa. After this meeting you should feel much more familiar with your new environment, and also eager to take part in the rest of Orientation. Monday evening will acquaint you with the student religious organizations. You are invited to attend this Church Night open house to meet the student group of your choice. On Tuesday and Wednesday campus activities will hold an open house in the Main Lounge of the Union. Here you can see for yourself what the U of I has to offer in the way of extracurricular activities. While the open house is going on there will also be an informal dance in the downstairs River Room. On Tuesday and Wednesday evenings there will be a combined sports and recreation night for both men and women at the Field House. Swimming, games, and gymnastics will be the program as you relax and get acquainted with other new students. There will also be demonstrations of fencing and wrestling, plus a Dolphin Club swimming review. There'll be a sock hop, too. You'll want to take an active part in everything, so wear jeans or bermudas and bring a swimming suit and cap if you would like to go for a dip in the pool. Thursday will open the school year officially. Be sure to be present on the east approach to Old Capitol at 9:25 a.m., when President Bowen conducts the induction ceremony. This is an important event for you, since it marks not only the beginning of the 1965-66 academic year, but also the start of your career as a student. The memory of this impressive ceremony is cherished by many U of I graduates, and it is anticipated by the student body as an inspiration to academic achievement and loyalty to the University. On Friday evening you may tour the newly renovated Iowa Memorial Union. Many old students will be there too, getting a first glimpse of the expanded facilities. The Union has long been a center for cultural and recreational facets of the University, and now it will be a focal point of student activities as well, due to the new activities center located there. You will be among the first to see what the "new look" of the Union has to offer. After Orientation Week you will probably still have moments of confusion. However, if you have taken advantage of the planned programs, the willing help of your Orientation leader, and the on-campus Information Booths, you will be far on your way to becoming adjusted to life at the U of I. 5
