Not all the action takes place on the main stretch of Route 66. Don't be afraid to take the roundabout way and to devote some of that talent and enthusiasm to the challenges of a detour. U of I will be twice as rewarding with the extra mileage you obtain, and you will feel much more a part of the University after exploring some of its many alternate routes. The opportunities on all sides are so numerous that it will be hard to limit yourself to one or two at a time, but the wise coed doesn't take on more than she can handle. When considering activities, remember to budget your study time liberally; when you've just entered the world of college academics, it is often difficult to gauge how much study time you need Try to find and activity that has special interest for you, either in or out of your area of concentration in school, which will enrich your classroom learning. If your are a journalism major you may uncover hidden talent by working on The Daily Iowan or the Hawkeye. If you are simply interested in politics, there's sure to be a club that sees things the way you do and would love to have you as a member. Perhaps you like to work with people and have a flair for fashion, then AWS Profile Previews is worth investigating. Iowa has a well-founded academic program, and activities at the U of I are equally diverse. Student government ranges from the Student Senate, which has elected members and many standing committees and elaborate projects such as Project AID and People-to-People, down to the council of a single dorm. Even in such complex governing bodies as Union Board, which manages the activities in the Union, and Central Party Committee, which produces all-University functions such as the Homecoming Dance and popular concerts, there are openings for a motorist like you. Within the dorm government there is a wide range of activities, including committee work and inter-dorm projects. If your field is music you will be interested in exploring the possibilities of the band (now well-known throughout Europe and Russia), orchestra, University chorus, or Old Gold Singers. The all-girl Scottish Highlanders march with their bagpipes and drums, making music that is famous all over the country and in Europe, where they perform on tour every fourth summer. Other activities limited to coeds only include the Iowa chapter of the YMCA, the Women's Recreation Association, and, of course, Associated Women Students (AWS). Many Iowa coeds may become "big sisters" to handicapped children in the Hospital School. Others are members of Angel Flight, an auxiliary of Arnold Air Society, or act as ROTC sponsors. Iowa coeds also hold their own in mixed organizations such as Sailing Club, Iowa Mountaineers, and many departmental and professional associations. All those who participate in activities have a responsibility to the University, for it is primarily students who organize and plan such major University functions as Homecoming and Miss U of I pageant, Spring Festival, Mother's Day Weekend, and Orientation. Activities are an excellent way to investigate the University's other supplementary routes and to see how you, as a student, can help determine the quality and value of these detours. 17
