American students learn to understand each other's cultures in a very real sense, thus promoting many new friendships and furthering foreign relations. UNIVERSITY SING If you have a special interest in choral music, University Sing is the activity for you. Each year, every housing unit is invited to participate in choral ensemble work featuring groups composed of and directed by YOU, the students of the University. From a semifinal elimination night, a select group of ensembles is chosen to sing on the Sunday afternoon of Mother's Day Weekend. Following judging by qualified musicians, first-, second-, and third-place winners are chosen. If you haven't much of a voice, but lots of talent and enthusiasm for organizing an all-University activity like U-Sing, then you'll want to take part in the planning. The chairman of U-Sing is a member of the AWS General Council and is selected each fall through application, as is her committee. Try out-it's fun. MOTHER'S DAY WEEKEND When May arrives, U of I students roll out the red carpet for all their families, especially their mothers. (For this and all other all-University events, your family should secure motel reservations well in advance.) Other AWS committees assist in planning and perfecting each of the following areas: tours, Mother-of-the-Year selection, luncheon decorations and entertainment, luncheon tickets and seating, and publicity. Guided tours of campus departments, the Seals Water Show and University Sing provide not only mothers, but the whole family, with fun. Highlighting the festivities is the annual Mother's Day Luncheon, at which the U of I Representative Mother of the Year is presented. Working on this weekend is a very rewarding experience; concentrated and thoughtful effort extended as an appreciative "thank you" to every mother is truly a "labor of love." PROFILE PREVIEWS Every year AWS sponsors Profile Previews, a style show presented for and by you, freshman and transfer coeds at Iowa. You model your own clothing before an audience of University students, entering in one fo the many categories of dress, ranging from formal cocktail dress to sports attire. Ninety girls are chosen from preliminary tryouts to model in the actual show, and one is crowned, on the basis of poise and appearance, to reign as Miss Perfect Profile. Applications and more information will be available next fall for the 1966-67 Previews. Why don't you make this one of your first campus activities? PERSONNEL BOARD The AWS Personnel Board has a function unlike most other AWS committees. The Personnel Board aids in selecting general chairmen for the numerous AWS projects. The board interviews applicants and then presents the proposed chairmen's names to the AWS Executive Council and General Council for approval. The board also helps the selected chairmen in choosing their respective committees. Personnel Board members are selected by the AWS Executive Council. If you like to meet people, you would enjoy this activity. 20
