The following is a brief introduction into the activities of AWS. Glance through this list and select one or two in which you are interested. We encourage you not only to participate, but also to serve on a committee. {Drawing of woman standing next to woman behind desk which reads "STUDENT ADVISER", woman singing, and AWS} AMERICAN RED CROSS COLLEGE UNIT The AWS Red Cross is an extension of the Iowa City unit of the American Red Cross. This committee is broadly expanding its services. Last year work was done in four areas. Volunteers supervised elementary school children at the Iowa City Recreation Center. Aid was given to the Veterans Administration Hospital by providing escorts for patients to chaplaincy services. Two new projects were initiated last year. The program was enlarged as an AWS Red Cross committee participated in socialization-recreation in the VA psychiatric ward. Volunteer workers were seen for the first time on the wards of University Hospital. Plans are now being completed for a fifth area, the County Home. Red Cross needs much more help. Just a few hours a week is deeply appreciated by those we serve. Won't you be a volunteer? CENTRAL JUDICIARY University life brings the responsibility of obeying rules and regulations concerning hours and conduct. These principles are outlined for you in the Code of Student Life, which will be in your dorm room. AWS Central Judiciary Committee helps to formulate and administer these policies. CODE FOR COEDS You're already very familiar with this phase of AWS! In this booklet AWS extends a cordial welcome to the U of I campus by easing the step into University Life. We have provided answers to many of the questions you will have and the problems you will encounter, as you begin this new experience. This booklet will serve you as a reference to explore and develop available opportunities according to your interest and ability. We hope as you adjust to everyday life at Iowa, you'll enter campus activities-especially AWS! 17
