FOREIGN STUDENT DINNERS This committee works in conjunction with the International Center in the presentation of dinners of the various countries represented on campus. Each month a different nationality prepares and serves a meal typical of their own country. AWS committee members assist in the planning, shopping and in some aspects of preparation. The dinners are held in the International Center, where American and foreign students exchange ideas and customs. The AWS function is important in showing to foreign students our willingness to share in the work and success of projects of their interest. FRESHMAN COUNCIL AWS gives you, the freshman coed, a voice in its activities through Freshman Council. All freshman women are kept in contact with the active body of AWS Council by these twenty-two girls selected by application and interview. These members represent each house in the dorms and Town Women. Council members distribute a monthly newsletter of AWS events to each dorm room. Last year Freshman Council initiated a new event in honor of U of I coeds, Women's Day. A speaker discussed women's influence in society. The afternoon concluded with a china and silver display and a fashion show, courtesy of Iowa City shops. The purpose of Freshman Council is to create interest and enthusiasm in campus activities. AWS provides this leadership training for future positions in AWS and in other organizations. Watch for applications available in your housing unit. INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL This is another area in which AWS cooperates with the International Center to encourage interest in other people's cultures and to further foreign relations. International Festival gives foreign students on campus the opportunity to share some aspects of their society in a stage presentation. American students and foreign students work side by side to plan this important event. MOTHER'S DAY WEEKEND The red carpet rolls out for all U of I families, most especially our mothers, the first weekend in May. Mother's Day Weekend acquaints all moms with campus life, everything except studying! This event-filled two days is highlighted by the Mother's Day Luncheon at which our U of I Mother of the Year is presented. the sub-committee which coordinate efforts for Mother's Day Weekend are luncheon tickets and seating, luncheon decorations and entertainment, Mother of the Year selection, guided campus tours, and publicity. Working on one of these is a rewarding experience extended as an appreciative "thank you" to yours and every mom! 18
