Party Lights [hand drawing of girl and boy] The Interfraternity Formal in January, later followed by the Interfraternity Pledge Prom, herald the new year. Fraternity men and pledges each introduce their queens at the functions. Sorority members and their dates dance through an evening at the Panhellenic Formal. The distinctive Military Ball in February finds the ROTC men arrayed in full military dress. The Honorary Cadet Colonel and her attendants are introduced during intermission. Just before the Mecca Ball, engineering students shave the beards they have been growing to prepare for St. Patrick's Day. Students with an MD in their future remove their stethoscopes long enough to attend their annual dance, the Aesculapian Frolic, and law students step out from courtroom scenes for an evening at the Barrister's Ball. Dental students know they won't hurt their patients at the Apollonian Frolic, while the little pink pills are shelved during the Phrmacy Prize Prom. Other than being the setting for many of our dances, the Iowa Memorial Union centers around informal social life, too. The Union has accommodations for everything from recreational activities to a high-fidelity, sound-proof music room. The old wing of the Union has a television room, a vast lounge with comfortable divans, a juke box for dancing in the River Room, Ping-pong tables, and a cafeteria. The new addition to the Union includes many wonderful facilities. The Gold Feather Room on the lower level has a fountain-grill for coke dates and for you who might miss breakfast before a class. Sixteen lanes for bowling and tables for billiards are in an area adjacent to the Gold Feather Room. Upstairs you'll see rooms for University student organizations, a modern lounge air-cooled during warm weather, a library and periodical room. 17
