Act One Act One usually sets the pace for the remainder of the play, and, in college, the study habits and classroom attitudes you establish at the outset will be your constant shadow unti graduation. Once classes begin, you'll want to learn how to best organize your study hours. At least 25 to 30 hours of study a week are recommended by educational authorities for the average student. You will find your work to be much easier if each morning you plan what you intend to do that day. In a profession you work certain scheduled hours; academic life is now your profession. Lecture notes are essential in studying for examinations. In taking notes, express the lecturer's ideas in your own words to insure a better reinforcement of the material as it is presented. To connect yesterday's lecture with today's try to skim over your notes just prior to class. Let your notes do the work for you; don't be a slave to them by writing down every word in the lecture. Center your attention on selecting important points rather than on mechanically writing. An attitude of concentrated effort can be more easily maintained when you do your letter writing and recreational reading somewhere else than at your study center. So-called mental fatigue is usually your own rationalization from lack of interest or your desire to be doing something other than studying. Value gained from a course is not necessarily correlated with the final grade you receive. Remember that learning is more than any high mark. The curtain is about to go up. Put your heart into the role and get under way with Act One! 12
