Your recognition for outstanding academic achivement comes when you are invited to join an honorary society. Freshman women who attain a 3.5 grade point or above for the first semester or a cumulative 3.5 i their first two semesters are eligible for membership in Alpha Lambda Delta. In almost every major field of study, you find honorary societies for those who achieve outstanding scholarship: Sigma Xi, for Seniors of high rank in science; Phi Lambda Upsilon, for upperclassmen excelling in chemistry; Rho Chi, for scholarship and leadership in pharmacy; Iota Sigma Phi, for women in chemistry; Sigma Theta Tau, for majors in nursing; Kappa Beta Pi, for women in law; Kappa Epsilon, for women in pharmacy, Pi Lambda Theta, for women in education; Theta Sigma Phi, for women in journalism; and Zeta Phi Eta, for women majoring in speech. Superior linguistic achievement is a requirement for Delta Phi Alpha (German), Eta Sigma Phi (classical languages), Pi Delta Phi (French), or Sigma Delta Pi (Spanish). Journalism students with a 3.2 grade point after their Freshman year are eligible for Kappa Tau Alpha. Phi Gamma Mu selects students in the social sciences for high scholarship, and Omicron Nu chooses its members among women in home economics. Purple Mask (National Collegiate Players) is for those who do outstanding work in the University Theatre and also maintain high scholarship. Junior women, selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, and service, are tapped for Mortar Board on University Mother's Day weekend. Liberal arts Seniors who rank scholastically in the upper ten per cent of their class are eligible for Phi Beta Kappa. Its equivalent in the College of Commerce is Beta Gamma Sigma. 15
