Backstage Just as the theatre is more than being an actress, the State University of Iowa is more than higher education. Participation in extracurricular activities will broaden your textbook education, acquaint you with new people and experiences, and no doubt help you to decide what you want to do after graduation. Doing outstanding work in a few activities is more worthwhile than merely possessing a membership card to several organizations. Campus leaders are those students who do well scholastically and who are also dependable in their responsibilities. For any girl, the best policy is to first adjust to college life and study habits, then to investigate activities more thoroughly. Attend the open houses and watch the notices in The Daily Iowan for announcements of meetings for groups that particulaly interest you. Drama and Speech [hand drawing] STAGE 7 Even though you are not a major in dramatic art, you can try out for any of the six productions and for backstage crews in the University Theatre. Acting, lighting, costuming, and set designing experience is offered in our well-equipped theatre. Student ID cards admit you to all scheduled plays. WSUI, the University's radio station, offers you valuable background in announcing, acting, writing, engineering, and news casting. WSUI broadcasts 14 hours daily, except Sundays. If you are interested in any phase of the work, attend the organizational meeting early in the fall. The Forensics Association has special contests for underclassmen as well as upperclassmen. The University sends speakers to several intercollegiate forensic events in the Middlewest, including, The Big Ten tournament. If you are interested in public speaking, debate, or discussions, look for more information at registration. 18
