Travel in Style [hand drawing of horse & cart] The clothes you chose for traveling are neat looking and comfortable, and that's just what you'll want here at college. Your own judgment and satisfaction should guide you in what you wear. It's especially important to remember that your outfits are all new to the campus, so don't toss out something old; we've never seen it before. Start to unpack your clothes, and we'll take inventory on what will be suitable for your life here at SUI, whether in the classroom, on a picnic, lounging around the dorm, out with that special guy, at church, or attending an afternoon tea. In all cases, whatever looks best on you and seems to be in line with the general fashion trends will work here on campus. We wear rather casual school clothes, so the commonly worn skirt and sweater combination with bobby socks and loafers will do well. Pleated or straight skirts worn with matched blouses or sweaters and flats are also appropriate for the particular occasion as indicated by the chart on the following page. Remember that the cost of your outfits plays only a minor role in how you look. Plan your apparel to suit your dates, budget, comfort, and reflection in the mirror. Any personal touches you can add will do the final trick. The weekend nights usually call for your favorite skirt and sweater outfits with hose and flats or perhaps a wool dress on more special occasions. If the evening should shift to a formal atmosphere, that dainty cocktail dress or dressy off-the-shoulder sheath will be your answer. Outfits such as these will usually suffice for an all-University party or dance, whereas more formal wear is seldom seen at Iowa. SUI coeds always find need for the stricly informal wear as well. Such items as sneakers, Bermudas, sweaters, slacks, or levis will come in handy for the many spring and fall picnics, or for just lounging around and studying. For the unusually cold winter mornings, girls may appear wearing slacks or knee socks to classes. Cosmetics and clothes alike follow the lines of simplicity on our campus. Keeping traveled-in-clothes pressed and mended is the best word of advice we can give you. Express your youth and natural freshness by a minimum use of cosmetics and other superficials, and you'll find this trip more successful and enlightening. 7
