Riding on Air You've studied so hard and accomplished so much, but to what avail? Aside from having learned more than the fellow who barely made the grade in your Western Civilization course, you might be invited to membership in any number of scholastic honoraries. High academic achievement for freshmen women is recognized at the end of the first and second semesters. If a 3.5 (B+) or better is attained after the first semester's work or if this average is accumulated by thee end of the first year, membership in Alpha Lambda Delta is conferred. When you enter a particular major field, many additional honorary groups are open to you. After completing their freshman year, women with a 3.2 average in journalism are eligible to join Kappa Tau Alpha, while upperclassmen in this field may become members of Theta Sigma Phi. Other honoraries in the various areas of study for upperclass women are as follows: [hand drawing to left] Phi Lambda Upsilon and Iota Sigma Phi - chemistry Pi Lambda Theta- education Kappa Beta Pi - law Sigma Theta Tau - nursing Kappa Epsilon- pharmacy Sigma Xi - seniors in science Phi Gamma Mu - social sciene Omicron Nu- Home Economics Zeta Phi Eta - speech Purple Mask - dramatic arts Eta Sigma Phi - classical languages Pi Delta Phi - French Delta Pi Alpha - German Sigma Delta Pi -Spanish Seniors in any department of the College of Liberal Arts, who rank in the upper ten percent of their class for scholastic achievement, may also wear the emblem of Phi Beta Kappa - a most coveted honor. Similar recognition for students in the College of Commerce is membership in Beta Gamma Sigma. An award for a combination of scholarship, leadership, and service goes to women of junior standing by being tapped for Mortar Board during the big University Mother's Day Weekend. If you've excelled in your field of interest or have rendered outstanding leadership and service during college, your efforts will be commended and you may justly be "riding on air" for your accomplishments. 13
