Just Cruising [hand drawing of person in inner tube] Traffic jams, long hard hours of driving, or just one of those parking problems will call for some relaxation. You're ready for a break from the speeded up tempo at which you've been traveling. Now it's time to cruise. Perhaps some fine college chap will be happy to join you. He gives you a call and asks to meet some afternoon. Well, why not? You eagerly accept. It's off to the Gold Feather Room at the Iowa Memorial Union, where you'll see lots of the college crowd. You visit over black coffee, and presently you will find yourself agreeing to another date Saturday night. He's fun to chat with and even enjoys dancing as much as you do. Come party time at SUI and you heart's a flutter. That favorite cocktail dress is ready to go and your nail polish is almost dry. Let the books close a forget you're a smarty, while you and your "feller" go to a party. Each year the Central Party Committee plans at least give all-University parties and several entertaining concerts. Big name dance bands like Duke Ellington, Tex Beneke and Ralph Marterie draw crowds of over two thousand. The evening stirs with rustling skirts, shuffling feet, and palpitating rhythms. Housing units and other organizational groups also sponsor many of their own parties of this sort. These events are scattered throughout the year and afford many a thrill. The first of these is Currier Hall's Winter Formal, later is the Spring Formal. Westlawn gives a dance called Caps Caprice. The men get in the act with Quadrangle and Hillcrest patries. The first of the big all University nights is usually the Fall Part celebrating the start of classes. The Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union is magically transformed into an elegant dance floor, with music from the strains of some famous band. Next comes Homecoming with all its festivities. First, there is the football thriller in the afternoon, with the wheeze of a Highlander bagpipe amidst an Iowa yell. Spirit soars to an all time high. Floats are built for the parade by co-operative efforts of housing units, and the Dolphin swimming fraternity dives and splashes in its traditional water show. The swimmers pick a queen and she and her court reign over the show. If the game ends in a victory, the large Hawkeye corn monument is burned to the ground. And then again, it's time to swing to the music of a nationally known band at the Homecoming dance on Saturday night. Christmas brings more trimmings and mistletoe. This time it's the Winter Formal and all the gaieties of the holiday season. to enhance the dance, Miss 14
