THE HALF-TIME SHOW In college, as in most other things, there is more than one aspect that should hold your interest, Of course your main purpose here is to learn, but this does not mean that books and studies should be your only consideration. Another very important aspect of learning is working with people by participating in activities. Activities can serve several purposes. You'll be surprised at how often you will meet others with essentially the same interests as yours while working on a committee. Activities give you valuable practical experience in various fields. This is true of almost every organization. If you really apply yourself to an activity, you will find that when it is finished, you have gained new ideas and skills which you will find useful at a later date. Activities are, in themselves satisfying. There are few better feelings than the feeling of a job well done, and this is just what happens when you have successfully completed a project. Activities are so numerous at Iowa that you may a first find it hard to limit yourself to just one or two. But the wise coed will be a bit selective in her activities. Participating fully in a small group of activities in which your interest really lies is much better than being a name member in a great number of organizations and not being able to do justice to any of them. It is necessary to hold the time you devote to such extracurricular activities in check, especially during your first semester, while you are making an adjustment to the new demands of college. Later, you will be better able to apportion your time, devoting the appropriate number of hours to scholastic work, activities, and relaxation. In this way, you will have a balanced college life, rather than one that is lopsided in one or another area. In order to acquaint you with the various activities offered at SUI there will be an Activities Open House held early this fall. You are urged to come and talk to the members of these groups, who will be on hand to answer any questions you might have. Then perhaps you'll decide to 18
