He is one of the many youthful patients at the Hospital School for Severely Handicapped Children, and he would like to have you for his Big Sister. Through this program, you visit Butch once a week for an hour, read to him, watch TV with him, or take him out for rides or limited exercise. Adopt a little brother or sister this year. You can both have a family away from home. Iowa Mountaineers For the bold adventuresome nature lover, here are organized hikes, ski trips, horseback rides, and ice skating parties. For the fearless, a summer excursion is taken to mountainous regions of the United States or a foreign country, For the rocking chair enthusiast, a film lecture series is offered. AWS The Associated Women Students, or AWS as it is more commonly called, is the largest activity organization on campus. You will automatically become a member of AWS, for it includes all undergraduate women at SUI. IT is up to you to decide whether you will be an active member or not. If you choose to be one (and we certainly encourage you to do so), the first thing you will want to do is attend the AWS Open House, where you can learn more about the various activities in which this organization participates. It is at the Open House that you can join committees in the various phases of AWS in which you are interested. As in almost any activity, it is usually necessary to have served on a committee before you can become the committee chairman. AWS is directed by a general council, which is composed of the chairmen of all the organizations plus the executive officers. It is in General Council that all the diversified activities of AWS are co-ordinated into one functioning unit. Problems are discussed and everyone keeps abreast on what the other members are doing. The executive officers of AWS are chosen in the all-campus elections each spring. This year they are Kay Lund, president; Diane Cherry, vice-president; Judy Repass, secretary; Kay Ackerman, treasurer; and Sharon Hamill, sophomore representative. Miss Helen E. Focht, counselor to women, is the very competent adviser to the group. On the next pages is a brief description of the AWS activities. Take advantage of Open House this fall to learn more about them. 23
