Social Committee The social committee of the YWCA is responsible for the various "Y" activities that more social than service in nature. The annual Silver Tea, held at the home of President and Mrs. Virgil Hancher, is a good example. This tea is one of the "high spots" on the University calendar. This tea is given by the "Y" each year and is under direct guidance of the social committee. The girls serve the refreshments and act as hostesses. Personal Service One of the best known aspects of this field is the baby sitting service organized by the "Y". This serves both the mothers of Iowa City and the girls who would like a little extra pin money. (And who wouldn't these days?) The girls receive special training in the care of children as part of this program. The mothers can call the "Y" office and learn the name of a willing and qualified baby sitter. Other jobs supplied by the YWCA consist of desk work at the "Y" office and some camp jobs for the summer vacation months. World Relatedness Trying to promote friendly relations with foreign students at SUI and in other countries is the main concern of the YWCA world relatedness committee. Visits to faculty homes and the annual book selling drive to raise money for financial aid to foreign countries are only two of the ways this group furthers understanding among students. This committee also works closely with the commission on Christian Heritage, which encourages interdenominational services in the Danforth Memorial Chapel. It also organizes and promotes study groups on religion and philosophy. Hospital Service The General Hospital, Psychopathic Hospital, Children's Hospital, and the Oakdale Tuberculosis Sanatorium afford experience in volunteer hospital service. The more active this program the more valuable it is for those performing the service as well as those on the receiving end. Girls are needed to entertain, to read, and to plan recreation. All are important aspects of rehabilitation. Community Service As a University student, you are also a temporary citizen and civic 30
