[hand drawing SUI "PROVING GROUNDS"] The Sky's the Limit Scholastic achievement does not go unrecognized at SUI. Numerous honoraries are on a constant lookout for prospective members. Academic excellence for freshman women is recognized at the end of the first and second semesters. Membership in Alpha Lambda Delta is conferred at these times upon all such individuals who have attained a 3.5 (B+) grade average of better. It might be explained that SUI grades on a 4-point scale. That is you receive 4 points for every hour of A, 3 for every hour of B, and so on down the line. As the years fly by and you have gained the status of junior, tapping for Mortar Board becomes an eagerly awaited event. This organization invites into membership each spring those junior women who have displayed not only above-average academic achievement during their preceding college years, but also citizenship and service. These girls in turn present the annual Smarty Party which recognizes those women on campus who have maintained an accumulative grade average of 3.25 or above. Then there is the oldest of the honoraries, Phi Beta Kappa. Second semester seniors in Liberal Arts who rank in the upper ten per cent of their class are eligible for this coveted honor. Initiation into this group is indeed the culmination of four years of hard work, and those attaining the distinction deserve one's utmost respect. Many additional honorary groups may be open to you in your chosen field of endeavour. After completing their freshman year, women with a 3.2 average in journalism are eligible to join Kappa Tau Alpha,while upperclassmen in this field may be initiated into Theta Sigma Pu. Other honoraries in the various areas of study for upperclasswomen are as follows: Phi Lambda Upsilon and Iota Sigma Phi- chemistry; Pi Lambda Theta - education; Sigma Alpha Eta- speech pathology; Sigma Theta Tau - nursing; Kappa Epsilon - pharmacy; Sigma Xi - seniors in science; Phi Gamma Nu - social science; Omicron Nu- home economics; Zeta Phi Eta - speech; Purple Mask - dramatic arts; Eta Sigma Phi- classical languages; Pi Delta Phi- German; and Sigma Delta Pi- Spanish 15
