[hand drawing] Special Tours Culture is not only something to be studied in the classroom. You as an individual should strive to develop it within yourself. Nowhere are you afforded a better opportunity to do so than in a university community. Exhibits of every variety, lectures, concerts and plays are open to your attendance. SUI has long been noted for its fine dramatic arts program. Those unable to participate directly in its work are fortunate in being able to observe its accomplishments first hand when plays are presented through the modern facilities of the University Theatre. You may also want to attend the Studio Theatre productions, which take place in the Old Armory. An appreciation of fine music will carry you to the many events scheduled by our Department of Music. Regular concerts are presented in the Iowa Memorial Union by the symphony orchestra, band, and chorus. Recitals and small ensembles also play their part in providing hours of listening pleasure. On at least one evening a month our campus is visited by a prominent figure on the national or international scene in conjunction with the University Lecture Series. Entertainers, journalists, politicians, and diplomats are among those who have appeared. Exhibits also await your approving glance whether in the Iowa Memorial Union, Main Library, or Art Building. Union Board annually holds a photographic display, while art exhibits are housed in the Main Lounge the year round. Whatever the day you may want to hop across the river for a visit to the Art Building. On hand will be paintings of every school, works of sculpture, and other artistic handicraft, much of which was created by the hands of students. Included in the University Library are books of great fame and value. the display cases in the main entrance house a continuous array of exhibits. A most recent addition to Iowa City is the State Historical Society Building, which should merit the special attention of those students of Iowa history. An oft-overlooked feature on the campus proper are the museums house on the upper floors of Macbride Hall. these are only a few of the opportunities available to those seeking a higher level of education. A probing mind is one which will make you and your life more interesting in the years to come. Strive now to attain that higher road and you will be forever grateful. 16
