and members of the University staff it has been possible to arrange a week of diverse and stimulating activities for you to enjoy while becoming acquainted with your new surroundings. Two hundred upperclassmen have been screened and trained to serve as orientation leaders during this period of adjustment. With your participation it is hoped that this program will achieve its goal of welcoming each new student and aiding him or her to become an integral part of the college community. AMERICAN RED CROSS This phase of the AWS program serves to provide entertainment and a type of therapy for patients in the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City. One phase of the American Red Cross College Unit's activity is the planning of five major parties given at the hospital during the year. Featuring fun, food and entertainment, each of these events is presented simultaneously on three floors of the hospital. Essential to their success are volunteer hostesses, who donate but a few hours of their time during the evening for which the party is scheduled. In addition to this area of participation there is simple opportunity for girls with an interest in service to do radio work, ward hostessing, and companionship therapy through the Red Cross volunteer service chairman. Hands are also needed to prepare tray favors used to brighten up meals on those holidays not celebrated by a party. MOTHER'S DAY WEEKEND The sponsorship of Mother's Day Weekend is very recent undertaking of AWS. With the assistance of a faculty advisory group this committee arranges a busy schedule of events to entertain parents visiting the campus during the very special weekend. Among last year's activities were guided tours through the Art Building, Television Center, Communications Center, and the SUI Library and Home Economics Department. Also on hand were the annual Seals Water Show and University Sing. Highlighting the festivities was a Mother's Day Luncheon in the Iowa Memorial Union at which time the Representative SUI Mother of the Year was presented. A wonderful time for parents to become better acquainted with their daughter's "home away from home," this weekend also holds much fun in store for you as a student. Start now to encourage your mother, and father too, to visit during this year's Mother's Day Weekend. 27
