250 Demonstration Cases May Be Consolidated Here Lawyers representing 250 University of Iowa students arrested in a demonstration last May plan to meet with the defendants to discuss possible consolidation of their trials, according to James P. Hayes, one of the defense lawyers. Hayes and Philip Mause, UI assistant professor of law, also reported after a meeting this morning that they expected the city to prosecute the students on disorderly conduct charges. "The fact that we are proceeding as we are indicates that they (the charges) will not be dropped," Mause reported. Mause and Hayes were among four defense lawyers meeting this morning with Police Judge Joseph Thornton and attorneys for the city to discuss disposing of the cases. Thornton called the meeting, Mause said. Mause said that consolidation of trails was discussed at the meeting but that no decision on trial procedure would be made until lawyers have met with their clients. About 150 defendants have indicated they would be willing to be tried in groups, Hayes said. He and the other lawyers will attempt to contact that group and also those who wish to be tried individually, Hayes said. Mause said he planned to "investigate in greater depth the constitutional issues involved, such as freedom of speech and freedom of assembly." "This will affect the decision we will make" about procedure, Mause said. Mause and Hayes said trial dates would not be set until a procedure was settled upon.
