Saving...
-4- that he was afraid he could not be heard, and I offered to read the injunction on the assumption that my voice was stronger than his. We then inquired whether Campus Security had a bullhorn and were told that they did have. The bullhorn was secured and it was further decided that the injunction should not be read until there was proper police backing to back it up. Since we did not know when the police would be arriving, I told Mr. Heffner that I would run down the street and when I saw the troops moving, I would call him in Dean Hubbard's office. He then indicated that he didn't have a key to get in the basement door and wanted to enter from that area and since I had my key with me, I proceeded to the North door of Old Capitol with him and let him in. I then ran down Iowa Avenue, and when I was approximately in front of Joe's Place, I heard Mr. Heffner reading the injunction. Since it no longer seemed necessary for me to inform him when the police were coming, I proceeded back up toward Schaeffer Hall and stood around visiting with students, feeling myself at somewhat of a loss as to what I should do next. Considerable time transpired, and it must have been nearly 1:30 [handwritten] a.m., May 8, 1970 before I saw the police marching in ranks of Iowa Avenue. [handwritten] * slowness of police arrival See note on final page I decided it was not appropriate for me to be in the crowd inasmuch as it might not be possible to distinguish me from others, and I walked back toward the Security shack. It should be noted that shortly after Dean Hubbard's call and certainly by the time Mr. Heffner read the injunction, if not before, the people who were supposedly in Old Capitol had left the building, and it was essentially deserted. The police troops took their position over in the Security and Gilmore Hall area, and as I moved past the Old Dental Building, I ran into John Larson and Captain Dickinson who were walking rapidly toward Old Capitol.
