-6- I joined them and John Larson introduced me to Mr. Dickinson, who was in the process of explaining what he was going to do. He indicated that he had been directed to clear the Pentacrest area and was prepared to do so and that he was going to give the people ten minutes to clear the Pentacrest and the option of going to the women's athletic field across from the Union. He further stated that if they wanted to stay there [handwritten] on the women's athletic field until daylight they could do so, but that he would set up a line of troops between the Union and the athletic field and no one would be allowed to cross it. Nevertheless, regardless of what the group did, they would not be allowed to remain in the Pentacrest area. Captain Dickinson then turned to me and asked if I thought there were students who were wanting to be arrested for conscience sake, and I indicated that it might well be. He said that he would meet their request and would non-violently move them to the buses if they wished to be arrested, or they could go under their own steam. He seemed very firm and stated that [handwritten] now that he was on campus he was in charge. He repeated several times that he was in charge. We went up the west steps of Old Capitol and I unlocked the west door so that we could entere Inside we found the Provost, Vice Provost Hubbard, Dean Huit, Gordon Strayer, Frank Smiley, three or four other people and an occasional campus minister. The building was dark, and the lobby or rotunda area was lighted only by light coming in from the night lights which illumine Old Capitol. The windows were open, and occasionally someone would crawl in or crawl out. Mr. Smiley walked up to Captain Dickinson and said, "Lyle, there is no need to arrest these people who are sitting on the steps. They are quiet,
