-7- they have caused no trouble, I have told them they will not be arrested." To which Captain Dickinson replied, [handwritten] Sir "I am in charge here. I have been directed to clear the Pentacrest, and I am going to do it." He then repeated the plan of action which he had told to Mr. Larson and to me. Mr. Smiley said to Captain Dickinson, "Lyle, you don't have to call me 'sir,' you know my name is Frank." Captain Dickinson continued to say, "Sir, I am in charge." [handwritten] **relate to earlier problems. Roger Simpson, a campus minister, walked up to me and berated me for allowing this to happen and wanted to know why I couldn't call off the police. I did not respond to him. While I fail to understand why the people on the steps or on the Pentacrest had to be cleared since it was our intention from the very outset (10:00 p.m.) to arrest only those who had broken into Old Capitol, I felt that to interfere at this point would mean an increasing problem in getting police aid when we needed it. Mr. Simpson then told me I looked like the wrath of God and wanted to know if I had lost my soul. It was apparent that the die had been cast and that there would be no backing down. Captain Dickinson proceeded to make his announcement from the porch at the east side of Old Capitol as he had said he would do. Most of the crowd dispersed, but a few stood on the periphery observing while the group of two to three hundred remained on the steps singing songs and praying. Those that did not leave were quietly and courteously arrested and taken to the police station for booking. Dean Hubbard and I left the building together and as we were nearing Macbride, Dean Hubbard noticed a small group of radical students whom he [handwritten] then berated for contributing to this whole situation. I then walked Dean Hubbard to his car, [handwritten] with the words "Fascist pigs" being shouted after us, and we each went home.
