Options May 1970 THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA Iowa City, Iowa 52240 Ofice of the President 5 November 1970 Dear Sprie: I am enclosing some materials relating to the case of Mr. Scott Ferris of the College of Liberal Arts. It is related to a confilct in interpretation of the options between Mr. Ferris and Professor McKusick. I am asking you go give me an opinion on this matter, as it is my recollection that you were the advisor to me on the application of these options when the questions arose after we issued them. It may well be that somebody else can help on this. The young man has exhausted all remedies and has come to me for a decision. Dean Stuit has told him that he will not present the matter to the adjustment committee of the College of Liberal Arts. I do note, however, that Professor McKusick in his letter indicates that he will accept a written order from the administration. As you know, I have stated repeatedly that it is true that I interferred with the grading prerogatives of the faculty, but I feel I must stand behind these options and appropriate interpretations of them. According to Mr. Ferris, he opted for choice 3, accepting a grade based on the work completed through May 3. In Professor McKusick's course, only a quiz had been given prior to that time as the final examination was to be the basis of the grade. Thus Professor McKusick had no basis upon which to grade Mr. Ferris. Mr. Ferris is of the opinion that somewhere along the line, after the options were issued, we made a statement to the effect that if there was not enough to grade a person on, a pass wold be given that person instead of an incomplete. That appears to be the issue. I would appreciate your interpretation of this matter so that we may give Mr. Ferris a prompt response. Moreover, if you think it desirable, I will meet with all parties concerned to resolve the matter, as I am perfectly willing to stand behind these options as we announced them. Many thanks. Sincerely yours, Sandy Willard L. Boyd Dean D. C. Spriestersbach Graduate College Enclosures cc: Provost Heffner, Mr. Engel
