THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA Iowa City, Iowa 52240 Office of the President December 17, 1970 Not sent because solved by conversation. R. E. E. Prof. Thomas Charlton Sociology and Anthropology 125 MH Dear Professor Charlton: In accordance with the memorandum issued under Provost Heffner's name and attached to the second semester class lists in May 1970, I am asking you to apply option 2 of the plan of options in the case of Miss Cheryl Amhof, 354-40-3374, and to all other students in her circumstance. The Provost's memo stated in part, "The options set the standard for grading, and no instructor is free to grade on another basis if one of the options is elected." Option 2 directs that students are to receive the grade of P (pass) for all work in which there was a passing grade as of May 3. If a student was failing a course as of that date, he was to receive a grade of W (withdraw). In situations in which a major paper or project was due on or before May 3 but was not completed at that time by the student, the grade of I (incomplete) was to be assigned. Papers or projects due after May 3, 1970, and which were not completed by the student would not be cause for assigning the grade of incomplete in the course. This directive is consistent with the Provost's memo. All such students should be immediately notified so that they will not be unduly penalized in this regard. I will be grateful for your cooperation in this matter. Sincerely, Willard L. Boyd cc: Provost Ray L. Hefffner Dean Dewey B. Stuit Professor Nancie Gonzales
