John E. Spears 923 River View Drive Brielle, N. J. October 21, 1965 Senator Harrison A. Williams and Senator Clifford Case United States Senate Washington, D.C. Gentlemen: I take a dim view of draftees publicly burning their draft cards; particularly, seeing students like Steve Smith of the University of Iowa given newspaper and television publicity for what I feel is a traitorous action. My grandfather, my father, and I all answered the call to defend our country. I have no sons, but my son-in-law has just completed two years of active duty and is participating in the Active Reserve. It was inconvenient for all of us, but when the time came we did it; and I believe this is every free man's obligation. Sincerely, John E. Spears P.S. My I.D. number in the U.S. Navy in World War II was 567376. CC: President, University of Iowa Iowa City, Iowa
