Summary of Policies Related to Discrimination in Off-Campus Housing at Big Ten Universities University of Wisconsin Approval of housing units by Housing Bureau is contingent upon compliance with the policy of non-discrimination in regard to race, creed, color, or national origin. "Landlords who engage in discriminatory practices in regard to race, creed, color, or national origin or who request information on application blanks about race, creed, color, or national origin in advance of renting rooms or apartments shall be denied approval of their houses by the University Housing Bureau and the services of listing their rooms or apartments with the University Housing Bureau. Judgment of evidence of discrimination will be by the University Committee on Human Rights." The Ohio State University "All rooming accommodations in University residence halls are available to all of its students regardless of race, religion, creed, color, or national origin, therefore, the University presumes that landlords will accept the University's non-discriminatory policy. In an individual case where a student feels that this policy has been violated, the student is invited to file a report with the Dean of Men's or Dean of Women's Office where a full investigation will be made. If the charge is substantiated in the rooming house will be removed from the registered list." (The above policy does not apply to private homes nor apartments since they are not required to obtain city licenses. In place of the old published lists, the Housing Offices keep a card index. A student requesting private home or apartment may be given names and addresses but there are no inspections or services rendered.) Purdue University "We make no attempt to separate or to cull out any listings by landlords who allegedly discriminate in selection of roomers. We have maintained our services on a non-evaluative basis. The only evaluation we make occasionally, and which might result in removing listings, would be from the standpoint of health reasons." Michigan State University "Michigan State University policy states that approved householders shall not discriminate against any student for reasons of race, nationality, or religion." Any householder who has been proven to discriminate will automatically have his home taken off the approved list.
