THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA IOWA CITY, IOWA 52240 [emblem to right] Office of the Provost 111 Jessup Hall Area 319: 353-5383 March 2, 1972 MEMORANDUM To: Deans, Departmental Executive Officers, and Unit Heads From: Provost Ray L. Heffner Re: University of Iowa Affirmative Action Employment Guidelines. Affirmative action is a responsibility to be shared by every individual in the University community. Recruitment and employment of staff is an important part of an overall affirmative action program . To help insure equal employment opportunities for women and minority group members at The University of Iowa, it will be incumbent upon each unit -- offices, divisions, programs, departments and colleges -- to locate qualified women and minority group members for consideration for available positions. In offices where such personnel are lacking or are only sparsely represented, special efforts will be made to see that women and minority group members are hired. The guidelines below should be followed in the filling of all available positions. 1. Records As special efforts to locate qualified women and minority group members are made, records of these efforts (e.g., individuals contacted, published notices, and copies of letters) must be kept by office and departmental administrative personnel for review. 2. Notices a) Notices of available positions should be published in local, regional, and national publications where appropriate. b) Notices may not specify any preference, limitation or specification based on sex unless sex is a bona fide occupational qualification for the available position. c) A statement that The University of Iowa is an Equal Opportunity Employer should be included in each notice.
