3. exchanges of students and faculty in the mutual interests of the southern institution and the University. Further, the Iowa Human Rights Committee, along with University of Michigan representatives, is urging coordination of similar programs among Big Ten universities, the University of Chicago, and Wayne State University as well as periodic meetings of representatives from these institutions to discuss other means by which higher education can advance the position of minority groups. 4. Community cooperation -- The Committee is charged with the responsibility of working with interested groups in the city and state. Accordingly, the Committee has cooperated with the Iowa City Ministerial Association in formulating the proposal for the creation of the municipal human relations commission. The Iowa City commission and the University committee maintain close liaison to assure proper and adequate allocation of responsibility. In recognition of the outstanding achievement in promoting human relations in the community during 1963, the Committee presented a citation to the City Council of Iowa City for its action in establishing the municipal commission. The Committee also has written to Governor Harold Hughes offering the services and facilities of the University in any way, including the sponsorship of a state-wide conference on discrimination at Iowa City, which will aid the work of the Governor's Commission on Human Rights. 5. Education -- The Committee has attempted to utilize education as a vigorous force in the elimination of bigotry. It has held open meetings to discuss local problems, and it sponsored the appearance of Mr. Peter Sussman, the assistant director of the United States Commission on Civil Rights, who came to the campus to speak on national areas of concern.
