6. Research -- A member of the law faculty is engaged in a study of Iowa statutes and ordinances relating to civil rights. The research will be published initially in the Iowa Law Review and subsequently will be republished by the Institute of Public Affairs for distribution throughout the state.
The University Library has instituted a special human rights collection. The publications of national, state, and local organizations, both governmental and private, are being included. This file has already proved valuable for action and research purposes.
7. Employment -- The Committee is greatly interested in the placement of students upon graduation. Much effort needs to be expended in this area, and contact has been made with the National Urban League and President Johnson's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity.
The Committee has found no instant solutions for the complex and subtle problems of discrimination in the north. Most of the steps which must be taken to eliminate discrimination are tedious and of little news value, yet this does not make them any less essential. While human rights committees and commissions are useful, they do not relieve the individual of his personal responsibility to refrain from using race, color, creed and national origin as bases for discrimination.
