April 20, 1965 Professor J. Richard Wilmeth 121 Macbride Hall University of Iowa Dear Professor Wilmeth: The Committee on Human Rights would like to make several suggestions about the organization of the committee and several nominations for membership on the Committee. We suggest that faculty representation be increased to four members so that at no time is the carry-over faculty membership reduced to one. We also suggest that alumni membership and student membership then be increased by one each. We furthermore suggest that the student senate be asked to nominate student members. We suggest for chairman Philip Hubbard (if he agrees), Arthur Bonfield, or Eugene Spaziani. We suggest for membership Ted Anderson, Edwin Allaire, Donald Epley, Lyle Shannon, James Spaulding, John Huntley, Richard Lloyd-Jones, Donald Carr, or Phillp Cummins. We recognize that the council may recommend against any reappointment. We suggest for an additional alumni member Al Heff. The present alumni members will then also decide on terms for appointment. For this year, one faculty member would be appointed for a one-year term and the other two, including the chairman, for a two-year term. We also note that in the future the work of the committee will deal more and more with increasing education and opportunity and less with negative discrimination. Very truly yours, Richard Lloyd-Jones Chairman RLJ:jme
