-2- It was also decided that regular meetings should be held on the 1st Thursday of each month with special meetings being called as the need might arise for them. The meetings would be open to the public and prior notice of meeting would be sent to local newspapers and radio stations. Furthermore, all agreed that we should contact the University of Iowa Human Rights Committee to assure them of our willingness to work along with them in the many areas of common endeavor. III. [Underline]Work of the Commission[End Underline] - Under this heading will be included a report on the a) Housing survey of Landlords, b) Investigation of Cases of Discrimination c) the Work of the Commission relative to the Fair Housing Ordinance, d) Chronological report on the Equal Opportunities Project, e) a listing of various speaking engagements in which individual members of the Commission were involved, f) Miscellaneous matters. A) [Underline]Housing Survey[End Underline] - A very detailed explanation of this survey (its purpose, the manner in which it was conducted, the results, and a summary report from each member of the Commission) was presented to the Mayor, City Council members and City Manager in early February of 1964. A second copy of this will be attached to this report, thereby making it unnecessary to detail the results of that work in this report. It should, however, be stated that this particular survey was of tremendous assistance to the Commission in understanding the problems of minority groups. It made the Commission realize, through concrete and undeniable evidence, that discrimination definitely exists in the Iowa City community. The facts of this survey also brought to light the possible need of a Fair Housing Ordinance for Iowa City. The work which was done on the survey taught the Commission that there is a
