-12- 17) Spoke to study group of First Unitarian Society. 18) Attendance at Civil Rights conference at Scattergood School. 19) Attendance at meeting of Iowa Governor's Commission on Human Rights - Memorial Union, April 24, 1964. (Commission Members: Help! Help! I have very incomplete records on speaking engagements, etc. - after January 1st.) e) [underline]Miscellaneous[end underline] - 1. A letter in the September 22, 1963 issue of the [underline]Des Moines Register[end underline] complaining of discrimination in housing by an overnight patient at University Hospital was brought to the attention of the Commission. The Housing survey later showed that the worst area of discrimination in renting rooms is in the area of the University Hospital. The hospital had always made up a list of available rooms for persons needing lodging for one or more nights. We asked the University Hospital to consider refusing to list rooms of landlords who would discriminate because of race, religion, etc. They asked us, in turn, to allow them time to do an investigation of their own. Their study substantiated our observation that there is considerable discrimination. The questionable solution, based on the principle that the hospital is not in the business of housing, was to decide not to offer or post a list of any available rooms. This would remove them form any possible cooperation in discrimination. 2. [underline]Human Rights Week[end underline] - The Commission cooperated with several other groups in observance of National Human Rights Week (December 10-14) and Human Rights Day (December 10). A statement proper to the occasion was released to the news media, and assistance was given to the Mayor in issuing a statement for the City. 3) [underline]"Color" Question on Voter Registration Form[end underline] - It was brought to the attention of the Commission that the question of color appeared in the City's form for voter registration. The City Clerk, the firm which prints the forms
