ANNUAL REPORT TO THE FACULTY SENATE Committee: Human Rights Year 2007-08 Committee Chair(s) Robin Paetzold Committee Members Barbara Bennett, Howard Cowen, Kevin McGurk, Robin Paetzold, Brian White, Jonathon Chaparro, Laurie McCormick, Astrid Oesmann, Victoria Schweiger. Committee Charge The University of Iowa brings together in common pursuit of its educational goals persons of many nations races and creeds. The University is guided by the precepts that in no aspect of its programs shall there be differences in the treatment of persons because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, and any other classification that deprives the person of consideration as an individual are those based on associational preference. These principles are expected to be observed in the internal policies and practices of the University, specifically in the admission, housing and education of students, in policies governing programs of extracurricular life and activities and in the employment of faculty and staff personnel. The University shall work cooperatively with the community in furthering these principles. Meeting Dates September 25, October 30, November 27, 2007 March 11, April 8, 2008 Activities 1. Participated in Charter Committee Orientation Training 2. Ongoing subcommittees explored issues of special interest to the Committee with a special focus on UI and IPERS investments as they relate to human rights violations in Darfur. 3. Participated in Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Week committee planning activities August 07- January 08 4. Solicited nominations for the Philip G. Hubbard Human Rights Award February-March 2008. Reviewed nominations and selected recipient, March 14, 2008. Robin Paetzold, Chair, presented the Award to the recipient Kate Karacay at the Finkbine Dinner, April 22, 2008. 5. Ongoing meetings and discussion with University officials and Coca Cola to explore issues relating to human rights concerns. 6. Representatives of the Committee met with the Purchasing Advisory Committee to explore the need for a human rights clause to be included in future vendor contracts. 7. Participated on the One Community, One Book 2007 Committee in the selection of Blood Done Sign My Name as the community human rights book as well as the 2008 selection Long Way Gone Memoirs of a Boy Soldier By Ishmael Beah 8. Participated in the Cultural Diversity Day planning committee 9. Participated in UI Provost interviews on issues relating to human rights/diversity 10. Met with EOD staff concerning recent survey findings. 11. Ongoing participation in diversity initiatives including the Campus Climate Survey Committee 12. Handled inquiries concerning human rights violations complaints.
